Roy Hodgson has congratulated Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis on fining his players for diving but admitted a similar system of punishment will not be introduced for the national side.

Palace players Marouane Chamakh and Jerome Thomas came in for severe criticism from Pulis after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Swansea, with both adjudged to be guilty of simulation by their manager.

The Eagles’ spirited performance was slightly tainted by Thomas’ booking in injury time following an attempt to win a penalty as Palace looked to snatch three points.

Pulis said: "They'll pay money for that. They will both be fined. It's a disease. It's one we're almost rid of but if people do it, they've got to be reminded it's not right."

Speaking ahead of his side’s friendly against Denmark on Wednesday, Hodgson gave his backing to Pulis but admitted he cannot enforce similar fines on his England squad as the FA doesn’t pay their wages.

"We don't fine players at England as the players don't earn any money," he said.

"Obviously he [Pulis] thinks that is important and all of us are in agreement that diving is a bad thing to do in terms of your professionalism as you are hurting fellow professionals.”

Perhaps wary of a future return to club football, Hodgson stopped short of saying he would impose such punishments himself, even if he could.

He added: "If he has done that I would say that is a fine thing to do and I congratulate him but I will pass up on commentating whether I would do it myself."
