Former West Ham striker Sebastian Haller is off to a tough start at Ajax after the Dutch club left him out of their Europa League squad - by mistake.

Haller signed for the Dutch giants in a surprise £20million move last month, having become the Hammers’ record signing only 18 months earlier.

Clubs are allowed to make changes to their European squads following the Champions League group stages, to account for new signings or players returning from injury.

However, Haller was a surprise omission from the 25-man squad which Ajax submitted to Uefa this week ahead of the Europa League’s resumption later this month.

“It is indeed true that Haller is not on our Europa League list of players,” an Ajax spokesman said, as reported by ESPN NL. “We are working with the KNVB [Dutch FA] and UEFA to find out where things went wrong.”

Ajax dropped out of the Champions League after finishing third behind Liverpool and Atalanta in their group, and will face French side Lille in the Europa League last-32.
