Sepp Blatter in favour of winter World Cup

Backing: Sepp Blatter has shown support for a winter World Cup
11 April 2012

Sepp Blatter today revealed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar could be moved to winter to avoid summer temperatures of more than 40°C.

The FIFA president backed proposals to rearrange the international calendar so the change could be accommodated.

He said: "I support playing in winter, when the weather is appropriate, and I am thinking of the footballers, not only the fans - the actors giving the spectacle.

"It should be possible, when there is a will there is a way."

Blatter also apologized for saying gay fans should "refrain from sexual activity" in Qatar, a country where homosexuality is illegal.

He added: "It was not my intention and never will be my intention to go into any discrimination.

"If somebody feels hurt, then I regret [it] and present apologies."
