Sir Alex Ferguson believes his former Manchester United boss David Gill is the man to turn around the game’s governing body.

Gill, who is “reconsidering” his position as Fifa vice-president after announcing he would resign if Sepp Blatter remained president, served as chief executive at Old Trafford from 2003 to 2013. In that period United won five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

The chief executive worked well with the club manager and Ferguson is convinced that he will play an important role in the coming months.

“David’s just what’s needed to repair the damage done to world football and the recent allegations of bribery and corruption,” he told the Sun. “Without question he is the best football administrator in Britain. He is honest, straightforward and has a vast knowledge of football.

“These are qualities which are alien to Fifa just now. He is also extremely eloquent and has a great presence. I certainly benefitted from his efficiency, working alongside him at Manchester United for nearly 20 years. We were a great team.”

England’s vice-president is understood to have ruled himself out of the running to take over from Blatter. However if he takes up his role as part of the 27-man Executive Committee he will be able to influence the future of Fifa even if he does not lead it.
