Heung-min Son’s sparkling form may be brilliant news for Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino but South Korea head coach Tae-yong Shin fears his side may pay the price at the World Cup.

Son has established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important players this season, scoring 18 goals and laying on nine assists in 43 appearances this season.

That form has brought him the regular role in Pochettino’s side that he has long struggled to carve out and Son has started 22 top flight games and five of eight in the Champions League. In total the 25-year-old has played 2,766 minutes for Spurs this season.

Son, whose last four games have brought him seven goals, may be growing in prominence for Tottenham but his importance at club level doesn’t compare with South Korea, for whom he is the star player.

“I hope Son can perform in the World Cup like he currently does for his club, but I'm concerned that Son's red hot form could cool down around the World Cup period,” Shin said.

“No player can maintain his best form all season long. I'm really worried that Son's form might go down from May, with his concentration waning and him becoming physically fatigued.”

Son is part of the squad for South Korea’s friendlies against Northern Ireland in Belfast and Poland in Chorzow later this month.
