Shane Long believes Southampton can add to Tottenham’s misery by stealing three points at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
Spurs’ hopes of snatching the Premier League trophy from Leicester’s grasp were ended on Monday, when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but they can still ensure they finish their season in an automatic Champions League spot by claiming one point from their remaining two games.
However that task may not simple for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, with both of their final opponents, Southampton and Newcastle, having plenty to play for before the end of the season.
Newcastle, who host Tottenham on the final day of the campaign, will be fighting against Premier League relegation but Southampton remain keen to ensure they secure European football.
Ronald Koeman’s side are in fine fettle, with Long finding the net in an impressive 4-2 victory over Manchester City.
Long told the club website: “The gaffer said in the last couple of years there's only two teams we didn't beat – Man City was one and Tottenham was the other, so that's one hurdle over.
“Now we've got to go to Tottenham and try to repeat the same result.
“We're very confident. It doesn't get any easier now, going to Tottenham next week away from home, it's another tough game for us, but we're playing good football and there's no reason we can't go there and get the three points.”
Southampton trail sixth-placed West Ham by two points however have played a game more than Slaven Bilic’s side.
