Gareth Southgate set to stay on as England manager after considering his future in wake of World Cup 2022 exit

Gareth Southgate has decided to carry on managing England after considering his future in the wake of the World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

The 52-year-old has taken time to consider whether he has the energy and support to continue, and has now opted to remain in the job.

The Football Association (FA) and a number of England players have privately and publicly backed Southgate to continue at least until his contract expires in December 2024.

Harry KaneDeclan RiceJude Bellingham and Harry Maguire all publicly spoke after the defeat in Qatar to say they wanted Southgate to continue.

Meanwhile, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, along with other members of the English game’s hierarchy, have given Southgate their backing.

They value the feeling that the Three Lions are capable of winning a tournament under him, despite falling short in the World Cup semi-final in 2018, in the final at Euro 2020 and in the quarter-final stage this time around.

Southgate has also considered the fan sentiment which was more measured than after England’s previous tournament exits.

He had spoken about being “conflicted” after poor form in the Nations League led to fan anger from the stands and online.

“I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult,” Southgate said and particularly referring to the ‘sacked in the morning’ chants after a 4-0 defeat to Hungary at Wolves’ Molineux.

It is now expected that Southgate will continue into Euro 2024.
