Spain switch suits Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres would be open to a move back to Spain should he leave Chelsea.

Barcelona were today linked with a £17million move for Torres, 29, but Standard Sport understands his former club, Atletico Madrid, are also monitoring the situation.

Atletico could finance a deal after selling Radamel Falcao to Monaco for £50m and while Barca are thought to have earmarked Torres for a role as an impact substitute, his former club may offer him regular first-team football.

Torres, who is on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup, is yet to hold talks with Jose Mourinho over his future at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho said earlier this week he was keen for a meeting with Torres before making a decision over whether to keep the striker.

But with Chelsea actively scouring the market for another centre-forward, with Napoli’s Edinson Cavani still under consideration, Torres could find himself marginalised under Mourinho, raising the question of whether he will fight for his place or end his two-and-a-half year stay with the Blues.

Torres has three years left on his £175,000-a-week contract.
