Diego Costa started up front, as Jose Mourinho promised, and Filipe Luis and Andre Schurrle came in for Chelsea's Champions League Group G clash against Sporting Lisbon at Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The two changes from the side which began Saturday's Premier League defeat of Aston Villa saw Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian drop out, while Costa continued as the lone striker despite his fragile hamstrings.

Nani, the on-loan Manchester United winger, started for Sporting, who were defending a 16-game unbeaten run at home in European competition.

Sporting: Rui Patricio, Mauricio, Sarr, Silva, Cedric Soares, William Carvalho, Joao Mario, Adrien Silva, Slimani, Carrillo, Nani. Subs: Marcelo, Jefferson, Andre Martins,Montero, Diego Capel, Rosell, Paulo Oliveira.

Chelsea: Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Luis, Fabregas, Oscar, Hazard, Matic, Schurrle, Costa. Subs: Cech, Zouma, Mikel, Salah, Remy, Willian, Azpilicueta.
