Spurs hope to beat Liverpool in the race for £20m Luis Suarez

Bidding war: Luis Suarez has an impressive goals record in Dutch football

Tottenham are stepping up their efforts to sign £20million-rated Ajax striker Luis Suarez this week but could lose out to their former director of football Damien Comolli, who has made him one of Liverpool's top targets.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to sign another forward this month and is being backed by chairman Daniel Levy to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League again.

Redknapp still wants Newcastle hitman Andy Carroll but hopes of a deal have been put off until the summer because Alan Pardew daren't cash in on the England international and risk being sucked into a relegation battle.

Spurs have been tracking Suarez, who has scored 110 goals in 154 games for Ajax, for some time and the 23-year-old Uruguay international is reportedly keen to leave following the departure of Martin Jol as manager.

Spurs are aware of Liverpool's interest and want to speed up negotiations.

Meanwhile, Redknapp remains hopeful that David Beckham will be granted permission to play for the club. The LA Galaxy midfielder was given the green light to start training with the squad yesterday but is only likely to be at the club until 10 February.

Redknapp said today: "It's great to have him here. We worked hard to get him and I'm hoping that he could come and play."

He is also interested in making a shock swoop for Everton captain Phil Neville, 33. Standard Sport understands there are concerns over when Spurs captain Ledley King will be able to return due to a long-standing groin problem.

Redknapp added: "I think Neville is a fantastic professional. But I'm sure David Moyes knows just how important he is for his team and wouldn't want to lose him."

Redknapp is also set to open negotiations with striker Roman Pavlyuchenko over a new contract.

His agent, Oleg Artemov, said: "In two weeks I will fly to London to meet with chairman Daniel Levy."
