Spurs move for Jan Vertonghen hits snag

Jan Vertonghen's move to Tottenham is being held up by a contractual wrangle with his current club Ajax.

Spurs agreed terms with Vertonghen during Harry Redknapp’s time as manager and even though they are without a boss, they remain keen to complete a deal for the defender.

The clubs have agreed a fee of about £9.6m and the Belgian is thought to be happy with the personal terms on offer, which includes a five-year contract worth about £55,000 a week.

However, Vertonghen believes there is a clause in his contract that entitles him to 15 per cent of any transfer fee — effectively a golden handshake. Sources in Holland suggest Ajax are stalling on paying that amount and until an agreement is reached, Vertonghen cannot complete his move to White Hart Lane. “I am hoping for a solution but I cannot assume anything,” he said.

While Spurs wait for Vertonghen’s arrival, they are also confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim.

Sigurdsson, 22, had a successful loan spell at Swansea last season and Spurs are confident of sealing a deal worth about £7m for the player.
