Stadium is safe despite collapse, say organisers

A small part of the roof of a stadium set to host Confederations Cup matches next month has collapsed.

A section of the roof of the Arena Fonte Nova in the Brazilian city of Salvador could not sustain the large amount of water that settled on top of it after heavy overnight rain. There were no injuries.

Stadium officials said the collapse happened because of a mistake by a worker inspecting the roof on Sunday. They said part of the tarpaulin on the roof was not folded properly, leading to the accumulation of water in that section.

“Repairs will be concluded in time for the Confederations Cup,” said a stadium spokesman. Brazil, Spain and Italy are among the eight teams taking part in the event, which is a dress rehearsal for the World Cup.
