Steve Parish offers update on Crystal Palace academy redevelopment amid coronavirus shutdown

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says the club plan to begin work on the new academy as soon as possible, though will not risk anything given the current coronavirus pandemic.

The Eagles chief was in attendance at Bromley Council's planning meeting last night as the club were granted planning approval for the redevelopment of the academy site by 12 votes to one.

Palace, who announced the plans in October as they look to become the sixth London club with Category One academy status, had hoped to have the work finished in time for the new season, though that could be under threat given the current Covid-19 pandemic.

The Palace first team training ground is closed for the week as the club await further news on the situation.

"We do have an issue with the current situation, if that stops us for some reason with getting on with the building work - it does," said Parish.

"There are more important priorities at the moment than this even, but that accepted we are going to crack on as soon as we can."

Once the work is finished, however, Palace will have quite the facility available to their development squads, as well as the local community.

The plans include one covered full-size 3G pitch as well as another outside and a full-size DESSO (hybrid) pitch - which will aid them in the bid to beat other London clubs to the best talent in the capital.

"This is an academy we can all be really proud of right in the heart of our catchment area," said Parish.

"Finding a piece of land has been really difficult and then attaining planning, the most complex thing has been the environmental side - the flow of the water building up on the pitches. It has been an incredible complicated project.

"I think this will give an exceptional opportunity to the boys, not just in their footballing development but in their educational mentoring. We can improve all of those with the facilities that we have got."
