Former England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admitted he spoke to MK Dons about their vacant manager's role but felt it was too soon for him to take the job.

Gerrard, who left the Los Angeles Galaxy earlier this month, held preliminary talks with the League One club, who have been without a permanent manager since Karl Robinson was sacked on October 23. Caretaker manager Richie Barker is currently in charge of the side.

"I'm just taking a bit of time to consider what's next. Exciting times moving forward," Gerrard told BT Sport 2 when asked if he was weighing up his options.

Gerrard did confirm talks with MK Dons but said he was not ready for a move into management.

"I spoke to them," the 36-year-old said. "I had a chat with the chairman. It's a very exciting job for someone else. It's a bit soon for me. But it is true, I did speak to them."

Gerrard's future has been the subject of much speculation as he continues to get linked to clubs in both a coaching and playing capacity.

He has been linked to a coaching return to Liverpool and also a potential role in the England set-up. A potential reunion with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic has also been widely rumoured.

Gerrard was also linked to Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory, but manager Kevin Muscat ruled that move out.
