Steven Gerrard wants Liverpool fans to recreate the atmosphere of some famous European nights at Anfield to help them overturn Zenit St Petersburg tonight.

Liverpool trail 2-0 from the first leg and Gerrard (above) said: “This is an occasion that the players need the supporters more than ever, especially after the result we got in Russia.

“I already know they will be up for the game but if I could urge them to get into the ground as early as they can and make as much noise as they can, then it will make our job an awful lot easier because they are so important.”

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers said: “Such nights really make Liverpool what it is. I am sure we will get the backing that will hopefully get us to a victory.”

Jamie Carragher, who will retire from football at the end of the season, is set to make his 150th European appearance for Liverpool.
