Stuart Pearce calms race fears

15 October 2012

Stuart Pearce is confident his England Under-21 players will not be subjected to racist abuse in Serbia tomorrow night.

Pearce’s side are taking on the Serbs in the second leg of their European Championship play-off.

The sides met in the finals in Holland in 2007, when UEFA officials were forced into an impromptu anti-racism announcement after Nedum Onuoha was targeted by a pocket of supporters. But Pearce (above) said: “That was some years ago and we have no fears in that respect. I believe everything has moved on since then.

“My only concern is making sure our players are prepared for the game and any eventuality that may occur. Anything else over and above that will be dealt with by the authorities and the referee.”

England won Friday’s home leg 1‑0 but Pearce added: “This tie is far from finished and they’ll make it very unpleasant for us.”
