Terry Venables: Manchester United have to be bigger than the excuses being offered by Louis van Gaal

Last night’s result was unbelievable, shocking.

Louis Van Gaal talks about injuries and needing a year to rebuild but quite frankly nobody cares, they’re just excuses and Manchester United have to be bigger than that.

Right now he has got to do one thing — and do it quickly. He’s got to restore the United last-minute-goal mentality that became Sir Alex Ferguson’s trademark.

He has to prove he is The Bold One, that he is prepared to deal with the current situation head on and that, above all else, he has total faith in the 11 players he puts out on the pitch.

He did a great job with Holland at the World Cup and I can still see everyone rushing towards him whooping and celebrating whenever the Dutch scored. That all seems a long way off now and last night he looked despairing.

But that’s what pressure is all about, and he’s under pressure now. Everyone is looking at him and waiting for a moment of brilliance and inspiration.

I’ve no doubt he can produce that, he is one of the world’s top managers and didn’t stop being so because of last night. But he needs one powerful performance to stem the tide.
