Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood was pleased with his side's attitude and performance despite falling to a narrow defeat at White Hart Lane.

After publicly criticising them following last weekend's 4-0 defeat to Chelsea, Sherwood insisted the better team lost in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to fierce north London rivals Arsenal.

"We were better than them," he said. "I thought we played well, we created chances, played on the front foot (and) defended together.

"We can't do that just (for) London derbies. I spoke to them in there and told them, 'You give me that between now and the end of the season: no problem, we'll be where we need to be'.

"I think the result for Arsenal is going to paper over a lot of cracks, they were outplayed today and they've got to admit that. We've outplayed Arsenal today and they're title contenders."

Sherwood felt sorry for Tottenham supporters who travelled home having seen their side lose for the third successive game.

But the Spurs boss hoped the home support could take heart from the performance.

"They are all going to be disappointed going home, the Tottenham fans, I'm disappointed but we have to take the positive from it and we've played better today, a lot better than what we have recently.

"We deserved to win that game not lose it."
