This was our best chance of qualifying for Champions League quarter-finals in years and we blew it, says Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey has admitted that when Arsenal were matched with Monaco in Champions League last-16 draw he thought they had a great chance of qualifiying.

Ramsey came off the substitutes' bench to make it 2-0 on the night with 11 minutes left but the Gunners lost on away goals after failing to overturn the 3-1 defeat they suffered in the first leg at the Emirates.

The Welsh midfielder said that he thought Monaco, who are fourth in Ligue 1, were a team that Arsenal would have a strong chance of beating.

"We have always played Bayern Munich, Barcelona, teams like that and no disrespect to Monaco but we thought we had a really good opportunity of qualifying and we gave ourselves a tough test from the first game," he said.

"We came here and have nearly done it but that seems to be the case every year.

Ramsey added that although exiting the Champions League at this stage was disappointing, team morale is good.

He said: "We have some great quality in this team and we will stick by each other and take the positives from this. We still have the FA Cup to go and I'm sure there will be plenty more twists and turns in the Premiership so we'll have to keep going."
