Thomas Vermaelen: I’ll fight to stay at Arsenal

Thomas Vermaelen has distanced himself from reports suggesting he could leave Arsenal this summer.

The captain started the season as first-choice centre‑back but ended it watching the late climb to Champions League qualification from the bench.

Vermaelen, whose time at Emirates Stadium has been disrupted by injury, told Dutch website Ad.nl: “I’m happy at Arsenal. I didn’t play much and that was frustrating, but things can turn around quickly.

“I was on the bench, but I could just as quickly be playing again. I’m working hard to make that happen.”

Meanwhile, Thierry Henry claims Arsenal can only justify their final day celebrations at Newcastle if they were in recognition of keeping Tottenham out of the Champions League spots.

The club’s all-time top goalscorer with 228 goals said: “Putting Tottenham out of the top four is like winning something.”
