Thomas Vermaelen's vow for Arsene Wenger

Thomas Vermaelen claims the players owe Arsene Wenger a quality performance in Munich tonight after a season of under-achievement left the manager facing criticism from angry Arsenal fans.

The skipper’s form has suffered in his first season with the armband but he said: “Yes, of course [we owe the manager].

“He worked for a long time at this club and he’s done a lot for the club. We want to give him something as well because he gives us confidence and belief and that’s why we want to give him something back.”

Vermaelen revealed that the criticism he and his fellow defenders have received has taken its toll but insists the players in a weakened Arsenal squad can turn around the last-16 second-leg tie despite being hammered by Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium.

“You always take it [the criticism] personally,” said the Belgium international.

“We are just here to go again. In football, anything can happen. Of course it will be difficult, but we believe in it. Football is a strange sport, so we will go for it.”
