Title race not over, insists Brentford boss Mark Warburton

Mark Warburton remains convinced Brentford can win the League One title and says it is too early to write off Leyton Orient’s automatic promotion chances.

Brentford are four points behind Wolves after losing 3-0 at Rotherham on Tuesday but they still have a game in hand on the leaders.

The Bees sit three points ahead of third-placed Orient, whose promotion push has stuttered in recent weeks, but Warburton knows there is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season.

“There are some very interesting fixtures left,” said the Brentford manager. “We play Preston, Orient have to play Wolves, Wolves have to face Rotherham — so there are lots of big games to play. Orient could go on a winning run.

“We dropped our normal high standards in a couple of areas against Rotherham and we paid the price for that. The players know that was unacceptable but it was only one below-par performance, it is not a crisis. It was disappointing but we have been on a very good run, we are still in a good position and we want to finish as high as possible.”

Brentford have midfielder Toumani Diagouraga available for tomorrow’s trip to Oldham after he was recalled from his loan spell at Portsmouth. Diagouraga, 26, impressed in League Two after moving to Fratton Park in February and Warburton hopes the player will play an important role in the promotion push.

“The idea of any loan is to give a player time on the pitch and Toumani has had an outstanding time at Portsmouth,” said Warburton. “He had a number of great performances and was made captain.

“We have had very positive feedback and now he is in good shape ahead of a key stage of the season. We now need him back to make sure everything is in place so we can have a successful end to the season.”

On-loan Chelsea midfielder George Saville should be available tomorrow after missing the Rotherham defeat through injury. Sam Saunders, who has been out since January with a knee problem, is close to a return.
