Toby Alderweireld resumes running work as Tottenham defender targets February comeback

Toby Alderweireld has returned to running on the Tottenham training pitches as the defender steps up his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Belgium international is still expected to be sidelined until the start of February, making him a doubt for a crucial run of fixtures, but his return to the training pitch will be a welcome boost for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Posting on their Twitter account Spurs confirmed that Alderweireld “has commenced running work outdoors this week as he continues his recovery.”

There was however no adjustment to a time line that means Alderweireld is set to miss games against West Ham and Manchester United, as well as facing something of a race to recover in time for the resumption of Spurs’ European campaign, with a trip to Juventus set for February 13.

Tottenham have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight games, in all of which they have been without Alderweireld.
