Torres to Chelsea, Mata to Manchester United, Henry’s Arsenal return - the standout January transfer deals

Premier League clubs have spent more than £1billion in the January transfer windows over the last decade alone.

The standout New Year spree saw Liverpool splash out £35m on Andy Carroll and £23m on Luis Suarez in 2011, while Fernando Torres swapped Anfield for Stamford Bridge in a £50million deal.

That window remains the biggest-spending in Premier League history although Newcastle's desperate push to stave off relegation 12 months ago helped push 2015 close.

Andros Townsend arrived from Tottenham and Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea, but they couldn't prevent the Toon dropping into the second tier come May.

Other high-profile January moves in recent years include Juan Mata quitting Chelsea for Manchester United, Jermain Defoe returning to Tottenham and Daniel Sturridge joining Liverpool.

But Thierry Henry proved a hefty fee doesn't need to be involved for a transfer to succeed as he returned to Arsenal in 2012, scoring big winners against Leeds and Sunderland.
