Tottenham were not ruthless enough in front of goal during tonight's 2-1 defeat to Monaco, according to Dele Alli.

Hopes were high among Spurs fans prior to kick off and over 85,000 supporters turned out at Wembley to see their side in action.

But, despite dominating the early exchanges, Spurs fell behind when Bernardo Silva rifled home past Hugo Lloris after seizing on an Erik Lamela mistake.

Substitute Thomas Lemar doubled the visitors' advantage before Toby Alderweireld pulled one back, but it was not to be for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

Spurs created a host of chances as they attempted to get back into the game but failed to put any away and Alli has bemoaned his side's inability to find the net.

"Monaco are a good team but we weren't ruthless enough," he told BT Sport.

"The fans came out in numbers and never stopped singing. We need to pick ourselves up and win the next game."

Alderweireld was disappointed his header proved to be the sum of Tottenham's fightback, despite dominating the game for large periods.

"Scoring creates momentum and we dominated the game in the second half," said the Belgian defender.

"We had chances but we couldn't score. We put a lot of energy in but we couldn't force it."

Spurs sit bottom of Group E following today's defeat as Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 with CSKA Moscow at home, despite taking an early two-goal lead against the Russian champions.
