QPR director of football Les Ferdinand admits the club face a tough battle to keep star striker Charlie Austin whether they stay in the Premier League or not.

As Standard Sport revealed in November, Rangers want to double his salary to over £50,000-a-week in order to keep him at Loftus Road.

Talks have been postponed until the end of the season so Austin, who has scored 15 goals in the top flight this term, can concentrate on helping the team stay in the division.

QPR are currently third from bottom and Tottenham, Liverpool and Southampton are all looking at making a summer bid for his services.

Ferdinand said: "We will be trying our best come the end of the season to make sure Charlie signs up and stays.

"But you know what we do understand is that players are ambitious. Sometimes they want to look elsewhere.

"We will be doing our best to make sure we give him the opportunity to stay and play in the Premier League.

"The aim is to replenish the squad and we don't want to be losing our best players like Charlie."
