Tottenham are more consistent than 'meltdown' prone Arsenal, says Glenn Hoddle

Glenn Hoddle believes that Tottenham's consistent performances can help Mauricio Pochettino's side challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title during the second half of the season.

Spurs currently occupy fourth place after their 1-1 draw with Everton this afternoon but remain six points adrift of their north London rivals, who are ahead of the chasing pack courtesy of a slender victory against Newcastle on Saturday.

Although Tottenham were not expected to compete for the title this term, Pochettino's side are well placed as we enter the New Year and could be in contention come May - if their form continues.

Hoddle is adamant his former club should be taken seriously as they, unlike Arsene Wenger's side, have lost just twice during the current campaign and are yet to go into 'meltdown' as the Gunners did during a 4-0 defeat to Southampton on Boxing Day.

"Other than Leicester City, Tottenham have been the most consistent side in the Premier League this season," the ex-England international told the Daily Mail.

"Unlike Arsenal, their defeats haven’t been meltdowns. There have only been two, and one of those came from a last-minute Newcastle goal.

"The other was on the first day of the season at Manchester United. Their back four looks to be the best, having conceded the fewest goals this season."

The Premier League has proven to be wholly unpredictable this season and Hoddle has warned Spurs they need to capitalise on the poor form of many of the division's best sides as such a golden opportunity to steal a march on their rivals may never arise again.

"In this extraordinary season, with Chelsea falling by the wayside, Manchester United weaker than ever, Manchester City inconsistent and even Arsenal prone to some awful performances, they [Spurs] have an opportunity which may not present itself again.

"This team has a chance to be better and they must seize it. They need to exploit the fact that Chelsea and United are weak at the moment and that is why I believe the board need to grasp the moment as much as the players."

Hoddle continued: "The players would have settled for the top four at the start of the season. Now I believe everyone at the club should reach for more.

"If they maintain this form for a couple of months, the dressing room ought to be able to summon the belief that they can win it."
