Louis Van Gaal has claimed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy left his house in a car boot to avoid the local press after holding talks about becoming the club's new manager in 2014.

Levy had held talks with Van Gaal as part of his search for a new manager to replace Tim Sherwood in the summer of 2014. Sherwood had signed an 18-month deal the previous December, but Levy opted to exercise a break-clause in the deal and recuit a new boss just five months later.

The Spurs chairman travelled to Van Gaal's home town of Noordwijk in the Netherlands for talks , but eventually appointed Mauricio Pochettino with Van Gaal heading to Old Trafford that same summer.

"Daniel Levy went to my house here in Noordwijk and left in the trunk, because Jack van Gelder [a local journalist] was outside", Van Gaal explained.

"It took a long time and he actually gave Manchester United the opportunity to make an offer."
