Tottenham defender Danny Rose will play out the remainder of the Premier League campaign with Newcastle after agreeing to an extension of his loan deal, Steve Bruce has confirmed.

The Englishman signed an initial six-month loan deal with Newcastle in January after losing his place in the Tottenham team following the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

The 29-year-old subsequently made six appearances for the Magpies prior to the enforced break due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The defender's deal was due to expire with the season initially scheduled to finish in May, but Bruce has now confirmed the left-back has agreed to extend his stay.

Rose is one of six Newcastle players who have agreed to an extension, alongside fellow loanees Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro, while Andy Carroll, Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo - whose contracts were due to expire - have also prolonged their stays.

Rose thought he would have more opportunities under the Spurs boss.

"We've had ongoing conversations with most of them now for the last few weeks," Bruce told the media via video link in his pre-match press conference ahead of their restart against Sheffield United.

"We're all in this unprecedented area of what do we do; there's been a lot of dialogue with the Premier League, of course, and what we're going to do with out-of-contract players.

"What they did is grant an extension until the end of the season and all our lads, including the loan players and the out-of-contract players, verbally agreed - and agreed - to stay on and play until the end of the season, which is obviously a good thing."

Newcastle currently sit 14th in the table on 35 points and welcome Chris Wilder's Sheffield United to St. James' Park as they restart their campaign.

The Magpies are eight points off the relegation zone and are surely safe, but Bruce will want to climb towards the 40-point mark as soon as possible.
