Harry Kane is expected to be granted extra time off before the European Under-21 Championships as Tottenham and England seek to manage his workload.

Tottenham and the FA are in discussions about Kane’s involvement in the tournament, which takes place in the Czech Republic in June.

Kane is desperate to play in the tournament and while Spurs, in principle, do not plan to stand in his way, head coach Mauricio Pochettino is keen to ensure the 21-year-old forward does not suffer from burn-out.

England’s first game in the tournament is against Portugal on June 18, with the bulk of the squad likely to travel to the Czech Republic five days earlier. Standard Sport understands Kane may be given an extra 48 hours’ break before linking up with his colleagues.

If Kane plays in every one of Tottenham’s remaining nine Premier League fixtures, he will end the campaign with 51 appearances in all competitions for his club. Spurs’ final fixture of the campaign is at Everton on May 24, before they travel to Australia for a close-season friendly against Sydney FC on May 30.

As one of Tottenham’s top stars, there is little chance Kane will be left out of a trip that the club consider an important part of their attempt to earn greater global recognition. It is thought Spurs will take their strongest available squad Down Under.

Kane is expected to be named in the England senior squad for the first time this week, as Roy Hodgson prepares for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on March 27 and the friendly in Italy four days later.

But if Kane is selected for the Under-21s, he will almost certainly be left out of the senior party for the matches against Ireland and Slovenia in June. The clash with Slovenia at Wembley takes place four days before the Under-21s begin their campaign in the Czech Republic.
