Tottenham star Heung-min Son gives emotional interview after Manchester United collapse

Tottenham forward Heung-min Son gave an emotional interview following the club’s 3-1 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday in which he apologised for the performance.

Son’s 18th goal of the season gave Spurs the lead five minutes before half-time in Sunday’s Premier League clash, with the 28-year-old having earlier been caught in the face by the trailing arm of Scott McTominay, leading to the controversial decision to rule out Edinson Cavani’s opener.

However, Tottenham collapsed thereafter, with United producing a characteristically dominant second-half display that featured efforts from Fred, Cavani and Mason Greenwood.

Spurs have now dropped a whopping 18 points from winning positions this season, while it is the first time that any Jose Mourinho team has suffered double-digit league losses in the same campaign to leave them seventh and six points adrift of the top four with only seven matches left to play this term.

Sunday’s result only added to the building sense of frustration, with Tottenham having conceded a late equaliser at struggling Newcastle last weekend in addition to a difficult March in which they lost the north London derby and were also dumped out of the Europa League in humiliating fashion by Dinamo Zagreb.

Son’s own frustration was clear to see following the defeat by United as he appeared close to tears during a post-match interview with Tottenham’s media team.

“I’m really disappointed this afternoon,” he said. “I really don’t know what to say, I’m really sorry about it and feel bad and with the passion from outside this stadium, those supporting us, I know it’s really disappointing.

“I think they are more disappointed than us, so I feel really bad and really sorry about it. It’s a really sad afternoon.”

He added: “It really doesn’t bother [me] about the goal. I really want to win, especially last game as well, I came on at half-time and back from injury, leading and draw. I wanted to really, really win, I really do but... I really don’t know what to say.

“Eight games left. I know it’s always easy to say let’s be positive or we will do our best, but I really want to finish well this season. I really do.

“Six points behind the top four, we have to get a result and wait for the other teams to drop points. We have to do our best and we have to take a big responsibility for the rest of the season.”

Son was then told by the interviewer that he had never seen him so low in six years at Tottenham.

“It’s a really sad afternoon because... I really don’t know what to say. I know it sounds really crazy or unnormal that I’m really down but if we win I’m really happy, if we lose I’m really down for two or three days,” Son replied. “What can I say, we have to bounce back strong next Friday [against Everton].”

“Another matchday and more abhorrent racial abuse suffered by one of our players,” Spurs wrote on Twitter.

“This has again been reported to the platforms and we shall now undertake a full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward.

“We stand with you, Sonny.”
