Tottenham in talks for Romelu Lukaku but no deal is agreed yet

Romelu Lukaku's agent today confirmed he had held talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy over a possible summer transfer to White Hart Lane.

The Chelsea forward has shone on loan at Everton, scoring 13 goals in all competitions — just three less than Chelsea trio Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba — and Levy is keen to explore the idea of bringing him to Spurs.

But although the Belgian striker’s representative, Christophe Henrotay, admitted that he had met Levy, he insisted no deal had been agreed.

“Yes, I am looking for a club for Romelu and yes, I had a conversation with Daniel Levy,” Henrotay told the Belgian media. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean Romelu will go to Tottenham.

“I am talking to different clubs but it’s true that there aren’t exactly 20 clubs who can afford Romelu.”

Spurs’ chances of signing Lukaku are likely to hinge on Everton qualifying for next season’s Champions League, in which case the player’s preference is thought to be to remain on Merseyside.

Levy said yesterday there would be no overhaul of the squad this summer, unlike the last one in which seven players were signed at a cost of more than £100million, offset by the £86m sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

Tottenham’s priorities at this stage are to sign a left-back, a forward and a wide player, with Ukraine winger Yevhen Konoplyanka top of the list of targets for the latter role.

Chelsea want at least £20m for Lukaku to aid manager Jose Mourinho’s bid to buy Atletico Madrid star Diego Costa.
