Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga has withdrawn from his maiden England U21 squad due to injury.

The 21-year-old was called up to Aidy Boothroyd's squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers against Andorra and Turkey after overcoming an early-season injury to play in Spurs' Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea.

Tanganga was a notable absentee from Spurs' squad that dismantled Manchester United in a historic 6-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, however.

England have now confirmed the youngster has withdrawn from the squad, alongside Tariq Lamptey, Reiss Nelson and Rhian Brewster, who were all named in the initial line-up.

Coming into the England side in place of those withdrawn are Brandon Williams of Manchester United, Liverpool defender Rhys Williams and Bournemouth forward Sam Surridge.

Tanganga's Tottenham team-mates Oliver Skipp, who is on loan at Norwich, and Ryan Sessegnon, who has sealed a loan move to Hofffenheim, remain in the squad.

The injury comes as another setback for the centre-back, who missed much of Tottenham's restart last season after suffering a stress fracture.

Though returning to the substitute bench prior to the season's end, Tanganga then missed the start of this season with a thigh injury, yet to feature in the Premier League.

The extent of Tanganga's latest injury is yet to be revealed.
