Mauricio Pochettino has revealed his frustration after Tottenham were denied a ‘very clear’ penalty in added time during their defeat to Liverpool.

At 2-0 down a 93rd minute Erik Lamela goal had Spurs back in the game before Heung-min Son was grounded by Sadio Mane in the penalty area moments later.

Referee Michael Oliver waved away protests immediately though replays showed that he had made the wrong call.

While Pochettino admitted that his side did not deserve to win, the Argentine said he should have been speaking about the character of his players having come back and secured a point from two goals behind.

“I think everyone saw it was very clearly a penalty on Son from Mane,” he said.

“I think we should be talking in a different way now, if it was given it's 2-2 if we score the goal. Now talking about character and personality. But that is not going to change with different results. We need to improve a lot.

“I told you after Newcastle, Fulham and Old Trafford like in Watford and today, the circumstances are the circumstances and the reality the reality.

“We need to still improve and improve a lot. This type of game shows you that we need to improve if we want to contend in the end to win some title.”

Tottenham have little time to work towards that improvement with a trip to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.
