Clement Lenglet has revealed frank discussions held at half-time helped lead Tottenham to a dramatic win over Marseille to seal their progression into the knockout rounds of the Champions League as group winners.

On an evening when all four teams in Group D could qualify, Spurs were staring down the barrel at half-time following Chancel Mbemba’s header on the stroke of the interval.

At that point, Antonio Conte’s side were destined for the Europa League, with their manager helpless in the stands after a red card during last week’s clash with Sporting Lisbon.

A stirring second-half comeback, however, ensures Spurs will play the highest level of European football after the World Cup break later this month.

Lenglet’s first goal for the club came during what is becoming a trademark improved second-half performance for Spurs before Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg sealed their status at the summit with the last kick of the game.

“We didn’t play well in the first half maybe because we didn’t know if we had to attack or defend and maybe it was not good to play this type of first half,” Lenglet told BT Sport.

"After we speak in the locker room and tell what we have to tell, we started the second half with more power and personality to go to score and we played a very, very good second half.

"I am happy to score here, more for the team and we needed one point and it’s very important to win these type of game. I’m happy because it’s an important goal for the team."
