Harry Kane was left to rue another frustrating result for Tottenham as his brace was only good enough to earn one point in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle United

Kane’s double looked to have handed Spurs a sixth win at St James’ Park in seven visits when he struck twice inside four first-half minutes after Joelinton’s opener with his 28th and 29th goals of the season.

However, Steve Bruce’s beleaguered side turned in a gritty display which was rewarded when, seconds after Kane had hit the post, Arsenal loanee Joe Willock smashed home an 85th-minute equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw and a point which could prove crucial in the fight for top-flight survival.

Following the result, Kane told BBC Sport: "Whenever you are ahead in a game, as we have been a lot this season, and you give the lead away in the last 5-10 minutes, it's always hard to take.

“I feel like we could have played better in the second half. We were a bit sloppy. We didn't take our chances and got punished for it.

"I think we had some good chances. The final ball, final pass or final touch weren't quite there. That's the fine margins. We need to play better. We need to dust ourselves off and go again next week.

"Their [first] goal woke us up a little bit if I'm being honest. We reacted really well and scored two quick goals then finished the half well.

“We didn't take that momentum with us [into the second half] and allowed Newcastle back into the game. It's always hard to respond with four or five minutes to go."

Kane’s team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was similarly frustrated, adding: "We had it in our hands. We should win the game as well, so definitely not satisfied. The Premier League is too good and too fast to do one inch less.

"I thought we had the chances and were dominating a big part of the game. We had some good, well-played chances and counter-attacks. I don't really understand how or why we let it go.

"I'm annoyed that we don't kill the game and don't see it out."
