Tottenham player ratings vs Southampton: Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon impress for Ryan Mason

Dan Kilpatrick @Dan_KP21 April 2021

Ryan Mason got off to a winning start as Tottenham boss as his side came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 and keep their slim top-four hopes alive.

In the absence of the injured Harry Kane, Heung-min Son cooly dispatched a last-minute penalty after Moussa Djenepo had fouled Sergio Reguilon.

The South Korean had earlier had a goal disallowed by referee David Coote, in consultation with the VAR, as Spurs dominated after Gareth Bale’s lovely goal on the hour had cancelled out Danny Ings’ 30th-minute opener.

Hugo Lloris 7

Made a tremendous start with a fine double save and then a brave block to deny Kyle Walker-Peters. Played more like a sweeper again.

Serge Aurier 6

Too easily beaten in the air by Ings for Southampton’s goal and offered little going forward. Got stuck in though.

Toby Alderweireld 7

Used the ball well and dealt with Ings, who beat him for Saints’s opening goal in the 5-2 at St. Mary’s.

Eric Dier 7

A steady presence at the back on his return to a back two. Fairly comfortable defensively, with Spurs on top in the second half.

Sergio Reguilon 8

Threatened going forward and won the foul for Son’s winning penalty. Unfortunate not to already have an assist after the South Korean’s goal was ruled out. A much better display than Everton.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 7

As usual, the Dane kept the ball moving against his former club in a steady but unspectacular display.

Tanguy Ndombele 5

Went off the boil under the Mourinho and still looks sluggish and short of confidence. Played a part in the Spurs’ first goal, though, with a crisp pass in to Lucas.

Gareth Bale 8

Showed his enduring quality again with a lovely floaty finish and was Spurs’s brightest forward for the most part. It’s almost like he should have been playing more...

Giovani Lo Celso 6

His decision-making remains frustratingly poor. Missed more than one good opening in the final third but showed his quality with a lovely pass to Reguilon for the disallowed goal.

Heung-min Son 7

Had one ruled out and then showed nerve to finish from the spot in the final minute. Perhaps should have been playing up front after scoring four at St. Mary’s.

Lucas Moura 6

Frustrating but chaotic – with mixed success. Played a part in Bale’s goal with a blocked shot.

Substitutes

Harry Winks (Ndombele 73’) 6

Within seconds of his introduction, he was involved in the move leading to Son’s disallowed goal.

Erik Lamela (Lo Celso 79’) 6

Looked to make his mark with some hard running and challenges.

Steven Bergwijn (Bale 83’)

Will be relieved to be back on the pitch after being sidelined under Mourinho.

Unused: Hart, Tanganga, Sanchez, Sissoko, Alli, Tanganga, Vinicius.
