Tottenham want to make Loic Remy their first major signing of the summer as they get ready to confirm Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach.

Pochettino is in advanced talks with Tottenham over a switch to White Hart Lane and is believed to have agreed a three-year contract worth £9million.

Spurs are determined to back the 42-year-old in the transfer market and Standard Sport understands they have made an offer for Remy.

The France international scored 14 League goals in 26 appearances while on loan at Newcastle from Queens Park Rangers this season.

QPR are resigned to selling the 27-year-old, even though they have secured promotion back to the top flight, because a clause in his contract means he can be bought for just over £8m.

Spurs face competition from Arsenal and Liverpool for his signature. Newcastle were also hoping to keep the forward but he appears to have ruled out a permanent switch to St James’ Park. He said: “The World Cup is a window. Newcastle want me but I don’t know if I’ll stay. It’s a pivotal moment.”

Arsenal and Liverpool have a major advantage over Spurs by being able to offer Champions League football but Remy is not their No1 priority.

It has been reported in France that Remy is also hoping Chelsea, who are looking to strengthen their frontline, will make an offer.
