Tottenham squad more valuable than Arsenal’s as rivals lag behind title favourites, new study claims

Tottenham’s squad is marginally more valuable than that of rivals Arsenal, but both clubs predictably lag some way behind their big Premier League rivals, according to a new study.

The CIES Football Observatory have this week compiled their estimations of the overall transfer value of each squad in Europe’s top five leagues - the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

Big-spending Manchester City and Manchester United lead the way with squads both worth in excess of a staggering £1.2billion after high-profile summer deals for the likes of Jack Grealish, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, followed by Chelsea, who spent a club-record £97.5m to secure the return of striker Romelu Lukaku.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool - whose only significant summer outlay saw French defender Ibrahima Konate arrive from RB Leipzig for £36m - and Real Madrid come next, with Paris Saint-Germain, Erling Haaland’s Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid round off an expensive top 10.

Tottenham are the next Premier League entrant on the list at position 13, also behind Juventus and Leipzig, with the data claiming they have the fifth-most valuable squad in the English top-flight as things stand.

If each of their players were to be put up for sale, the report claims that Spurs’ current squad would fetch a collective transfer value of €568m (£484.9m).

That is narrowly ahead of 14th-placed Arsenal, whose squad transfer value is placed slightly lower at €563m (£480.7m) following a record summer spending spree in which they lavished around £145m on new signings such as Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Nuno Tavares in a bid to make huge improvements under Mikel Arteta.

Tottenham, meanwhile, spent £42.5m on Argentine defender Cristian Romero - their second most-expensive signing after Tanguy Ndombele - while also adding Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal and Pape Sarr on permanent deals, additionally loaning Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Most importantly, they were able to keep hold of England captain Harry Kane despite a summer-long saga in which they had to resist serious interest in a British record deal from Manchester City, though his value will only decrease as he gets closer to his current contract expiring in the summer of 2024.

Leicester sit two places below at Arsenal in 16th on the CIES list, with an estimated squad value of €480m.

West Ham’s players are given a collective transfer value of €337m, meanwhile, nestling them between Atalanta of Serie A and Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.
