Tottenham striker Harry Kane can become the best player in the Premier League, insists Jan Vertonghen

Harry Kane can become the best player in the Premier League, according to Tottenham teammate Jan Vertonghen.

The 22-year-old forward enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season last term and scored 31 goals in all competitions to establish himself as Spurs' first-choice striker.

Such blistering form has eluded the England international in the early stages of the current campaign as he has only found the net once in eight top flight appearances.

Accusations that Kane is suffering from second season syndrome have been rife but Vertonghen expects his north London teammate to overcome his slump and make an even greater contribution to Mauricio Pochettino's side.

"All eyes are on him in our team. We are helping him to get the same or even more goals for this season as he did last time," the Belgian explained.

"Defenders are on him and he knows that. He is a smart guy, is a professional and works hard. The goals will come.

"I'm convinced he is going to be one of the best players in the Premier League one day and maybe the best. Harry is always there and will always score goals."

Kane's Three Lions colleague Jamie Vardy is currently the Premier League's top scorer with a tally of seven.

The Spurs front man will have an opportunity to improve his goal tally when Tottenham welcome Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to White Hart Lane on Saturday October 17.
