Tottenham transfer news: Coventry want £7m for James Maddison with Alex Pritchard and Fazio set to leave Spurs

Big fee: Maddison has only started 12 first-team matches

Tottenham are cooling on the idea of signing James Maddison from Coventry due to the League One club’s asking price.

Spurs have watched Maddison, a 19-year-old midfielder, closely this season and had been exploring a deal similar to the agreement they reached for Dele Alli a year ago.

Alli signed for £5million last January but spent the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign at Milton Keynes Dons before moving to White Hart Lane during the summer.

Yet Standard Sport understands Coventry are now looking for about £7m for Maddison – a high fee for a player who has started only 12 first-team matches. He is not thought to be at the same stage of his career as Alli was a year ago. When Alli left Milton Keynes last summer, he had played nearly 100 competitive games for them.

Tottenham are, meanwhile, expecting Alex Pritchard to complete a loan move to West Brom today. The player was having a medical at Albion’s training ground this morning and hoped to seal the switch in time to face Swansea in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Pritchard also attracted interest from Swansea and Norwich as well as from a number of clubs in the Championship, including Burnley, Middlesbrough, Brighton, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday.

The 22-year-old is highly regarded by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino but missed the first half of this season after having an ankle operation in October. He has made just one appearance, as a late substitute in the 0-0 home draw with Everton in August.

The Pritchard deal is thought to be unconnected to any Spurs bid for Saido Berahino in this window, but it could help an eventual summer transfer if Berahino stays at The Hawthorns for the rest of the campaign.

Federico Fazio is expected to follow Pritchard out of White Hart Lane. The defender was due to rejoin former club Sevilla on loan after falling out of favour with Pochettino this term
