Tottenham transfer news: Spurs offered Lamela or Townsend to Southampton in bid to land Wanyama

Offered: Lamela was used as bait to land Wanyama

Tottenham were prepared to pay up to £20million for Victor Wanyama and allow Andros Townsend or Erik Lamela join Southampton as part of the deal, Standard Sport understands.

Wanyama, 24, wanted to link up again with Mauricio Pochettino and became Spurs No1 midfield target in the closing days of the transfer window, but Southampton were unwilling to sell.

Having seen Toby Alderweireld, Pochettino and Paul Mitchell, their former recruitment chief, move to Spurs in recent times, Saints were reluctant to see another key man move to White Hart Lane.

Their stance is similar to the one taken with Morgan Schneiderlin last summer. Pochettino was desperate for the Frenchman to follow him to Spurs, but Southampton stood firm, and they have done so again with Wanyama.

Spurs retained an interest in Axel Witsel but the Belgium midfielder believes he will be retained by Zenit St Petersburg at least until the transfer window re-opens in January.
