Charlton Women have called for changes to rules in the women’s game after the FA allowed Kit Graham to join Tottenham despite being under contract.

Graham had her contract extended by Charlton this summer but the FA say they did not follow the correct criteria.

Tottenham were allowed to sign the forward on a free transfer on Wednesday and Charlton have expressed their disappointment that the FA have ratified the move.

Charlton are considering legal action and want compensation for the 23-year-old who had been with the south London club since the age of nine and was named Players’ Player of the Year in the Women’s Championship last season.

In the women’s game there are no compensation rules for players like in the men’s game and Charlton are also pushing for the FA to change their laws.

A Charlton Athletic Women's spokesperson said: "We believe we have followed the rules within the contract and are frustrated that there is no compensation money in place in the women’s game. We want compensation for the fact we invested tens of thousands of pounds into developed a player who we believe is still under a contract of employment with the club.

“It also it brings into question if certain rules of the women’s game are strong enough to protect a player who you invest in. The women’s game is growing so fast that some rulings have not caught up.

“We are proud we have produced a player to go into the Super League and the club has a proud history of producing players who have performed at the top level for clubs and country. We are just disappointed in the way the transfer has been allowed to happen. We do not have loads of money and we are losing one of our best players with no form of compensation.”

A Tottenham spokesperson said: “The FA has confirmed that Kit has been registered with us in line with their rules."
