Tottenham legend Gary Lineker has criticised the club’s decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino, saying: “Good luck with finding a better replacement… ain’t gonna happen.”

Spurs announced the Argentine’s shock departure on Monday night, with chairman Daniel Levy saying that although the board were “extremely reluctant to make this change” it was “in the club’s best interests”.

Pochettino’s departure comes less than six months after he guided Spurs to their first ever Champions League final, which ended in a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in Madrid.

And Lineker was among those to voice his displease at the sacking of the man who also oversaw Spurs move into a new stadium, and took them to four successive top four finishes in the Premier League.

“Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked by @SpursOfficial,” he tweeted. “He helped the club to punch massively above their weight for years. Good luck with finding a better replacement… ain’t gonna happen.”

Fellow former Spurs player-turned TV pundit Jermaine Jenas was also disappointed with the club’s drastic action: “Shoulda backed him not sacked him! Gutted for Mauricio.”
