New Tottenham stadium WILL host Champions League quarter-final home leg

Tottenham look set to host Champions League football at their new stadium this season, providing test events scheduled for this month go to plan.

The club announced on Friday that they had reached an agreement to ensure that a Premier League match would be held at their new ground at the start of next month, followed by the Champions League quarter-final.

After a series of delays and controversies, it looks as if Spurs will follow through on their marketing promise that the new ground would be ‘The only place to watch UEFA Champions League in London’.

The slogan, displayed on posters across the capital, was seen as a dig at London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, both playing in the Europa League this year, but it looked set to backfire when Spurs were on the brink of a group stage exit, having played all their games at Wembley.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side prevailed against the odds, before seeing off Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate earlier this week to put their name in the hat for the quarter-final draw next Friday.

Presuming that two test events – an U18 Premier League match against Southampton and a legends match – go well, and the club obtain a safety certificate, the new stadium will host a Premier League clash against either Brighton or Crystal Palace on Wednesday 3 April.

They would then host a Champions League quarter-final on either the 9/10 April or the 16/17 April, depending on whether they are drawn at home in the first or second leg.
