Tottenham’s England international Danny Rose has proven himself to be the best left-back in the Premier League, according to his former team-mate Andros Townsend.

Rose was England’s first choice left-back throughout Euro 2016 but faces a renewed challenge from Manchester United’s Luke Shaw ahead of Sam Allardyce’s first match as the new manager, away to Slovakia on Sunday.

But for Townsend, who came up against his former team-mates when Crystal Palace lost 1-0 away to Tottenham last month, Rose is the best option available to Allardyce, and indeed to any of the Premier League’s managers.

"To be honest, the player I like playing against the most is Danny Rose," he said.

"He's probably the best left-back in the country in my eyes.

"In training at Spurs we used to go at it in the sessions and we'd kick each other a lot so I do enjoy playing against him."

Rose, 26, was named to the PFA Team of the Year for the first time in his career last season. He was joined by three other Tottenham team-mates – Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Harry Kane – after Mauricio Pochettino’s side pushed Leicester closest for much of the title race.
