Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane is better-placed to handle his barren scoring run this season than he was last.

Just as he did in 2015-16, Kane has made a slow start to the campaign, failing to score in each of Tottenham’s opening three matches after a poor Euro 2016 with England.

Kane struggled in the opening two months of last season, only to find form thereafter and finish the campaign as the Premier League’s leading marksman.

Kane will seek to break his duck at Stoke on Saturday and Pochettino said: “He needs to be calm. It is difficult after the Euros and then the expectation on him is massive.

“Every time he touches the ball, we wait for him to score, and it is difficult when you need to be fit, to give your best. It is about patience, time, hard work from him and I am sure he will start to score again. He is starting to be much better.

“It was the same at the end of 2014-15. He went away with England Under-21s and the expectation was to win the European Championships. But he didn’t score in three games and it was a big disappointment for him.

“Now it is the same situation but he is more mature and more experienced. It is a different period in his life and there is no doubt he will start to score again.”
