Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is set to return to action for Belgium tonight after overcoming an ankle injury.

Vertonghen was left out of the squad for the Red Devils first match of the international period, a 3-3 friendly draw with Mexico in Brussels, but the Belgium hierarchy had always been optimistic that the 30-year-old would be available for their second fixture against Japan.

Whilst Tottenham will welcome Vertonghen’s return to fitness they will doubtless pay close attention to events at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges tonight.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez said: “I can already tell you that [Liverpool goalkeeper] Simon Mignolet will start the match against Japan.

“[Watford defender] Christian Kabasele and Jan Vertonghen will also play.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is already facing several selection doubts across his side for Saturday’s visit to Arsenal, with Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Harry Winks having missed international duty due to injuries.

Pochettino was optimistic on the chances of Alli and Kane featuring but the remaining trio face a race against time to make the Emirates Stadium clash.
