Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has withdrawn from the England squad ahead of qualifiers with Malta and Slovakia and returned to the north London club.

England announced that the 26-year-old had not trained all week and had arrived at St. George’s Park with a problem, having picked up the injury on club duty.

The FA released a statement saying: "Kieran Trippier has left the England camp and returned to Tottenham.

"The right-back hasn't trained all week at St George's Park as he continued rehabilitation on an injury sustained playing for Spurs.

"With the England squad due to depart for Malta on Thursday afternoon, it was felt it was in the player's best interests to return to his club.

"No replacements are planned at this moment in time and (England boss) Gareth Southgate will travel with a 26-man Three Lions group ahead of the World Cup qualifier."

The Spurs full-back missed the start to the Premier League season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side with minor ligament damage.

The former Burnley man had been promoted to the first-choice right-back for games against Chelsea and Burnley in the wake of England teammate Kyle Walker’s £50m move to Manchester City.

However, Trippier will now face competition from Ivorian international Serge Aurier, who arrived at the club from Paris Saint-Germain on Deadline Day.
