RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann has conceded that there is ‘nothing we can do’ to keep Timo Werner at the club.

The 24-year-old is one of the most highly-rated strikers in Europe, and is admired by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Werner has a release clause reportedly worth £49million which expires at the end of this month, and the player is understood to favour a move to Anfield to work under Jurgen Klopp.

But Liverpool are yet to firm up that interest with an offer, despite their excellent relationship with the Red Bull hierarchy - built while bringing in Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino from Leipzig and Salzburg respectively.

Chelsea, meanwhile, rate Werner extremely highly but Frank Lampard would prefer to sign former Celtic and Fulham striker Moussa Dembele from Lyon.

Dembele would have commanded a fee close to £80m before the coronavirus outbreak, but Lyon are expected to consider lower offers as they make financial adjustments following the curtailment of the Ligue 1 season.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rates Werner highlight, but they too are prioritising other targets.

So, for now, Werner stays at Leipzig. But after another noteworthy performance on Monday night, Nagelsmann conceded that keeping their star striker will be difficult.

"There is nothing we can do about it," Nagelsmann told reporters. "He knows what he has in Leipzig and also what he has with me."

"I show him that — he gets many chances to develop himself. I don't know if it will help him that much if I tell him every day.

"A player has to feel that he can get better. If he doesn't feel that, it wouldn't do any good if I kept on telling him to stay here.

"In the end, it is his life, his career, he can decide that. I can't think of anything new to say to Timo."
